The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts
420 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, QLD 4005
About
Australia's first truly integrated creative art space, The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley was officially opened in the latter half of 2001 to generate a unique blend of contemporary dance and music, visual arts, contemporary chamber circus, multimedia, indigenous theatre, youth arts and screen culture.
The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts is a cutting-edge centre which incorporates a 300-seat performance space, modern art gallery, artist studios, a screening room, purpose built administration and storage facilities, workshops and theatre, music, dance and circus rehearsal spaces.
Named after the late Queensland poet and environmental activist, the establishment of the Judith Wright Centre is the result of a unique partnership between seven founding arts organisations and the Queensland Government. The founding organisations were; Elision Contemporary Music Ensemble, Expressions Dance Company, Circa: Rock 'n' Roll Circus Ensemble, Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts, The Institute of Modern Art and the Brisbane branch of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
Youth Arts Queensland, the Australian Film Commission, Ausdance Queensland and Raw Metal have since moved into the Centre as creative industry tenants, representing the breadth and style of Queensland's state of the arts. Work by independent Brisbane artists and local and international musicians is shown regularly. An edgy performance program featuring electronic and world music, performance art and cabaret adds a fierce new twist to valley culture.
