Cole Porter’s marvellous musical about a theatre company putting on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” is a delightful romp about love and romance.
It was first performed on Broadway in 1948 and was revived very successfully in 1999 where it won the Tony Award for the Best Musical.
Fred Graham, the manager and director of the company, was once married to Lilli Vanessi, the leading lady, and is still infatuated with her. In the Shrew, they play Petruchio and Katherine and their stormy relationship runs parallel to their real life relationship.
The sub-plot is the rocky romance of Lois Lane, a helpless flirt, and her dance partner and incurable gambler, Bill Cahoun.
Enter two gangsters who arrive to collect Bill’s gambling debt but end up as part of the show.
Kiss Me, Kate’s musical numbers include Another Opening, Another Show, I Hate Men, Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Too Darn Hot, Always True to You in My Fashion, Why Can’t You Behave, So In Love and From This Moment On.
