"Princess Ivona" is set in a superficial and ineffective court riddled with convention and supercilious elegance. The presence of a plain village girl, Ivona, acts as a mirror, a sponge, and a magnifying glass to the ridiculous flippancy of the nobility.
Gombrowicz uses elements of nightmarish fairytale, absurd gesture and playful, peculiar witticism to reveal hilarious insights into secrecy, ugliness and self-obsession.
"Princess Ivona" was the first play by Witold Gombrowicz. It was performed in 1938 and marks the beginning of Gombrowicz's profound influence on European theatre after the Second World War. He was an important figure in the development of the Theatre of the Absurd and was admired by such directors as Jarocki, Jorge Lavelli, H B Fortuin, and Georges Wilson. In 1995 Ingmar Bergman, when given the opportunity to choose the final play of his career after many years as the artistic director of The Royal Dramatic Theatre (Sweden's National Theatre) decided upon Gombrowicz's "Princes Ivona".
