Belle Doyle, best remembered in the title role of the long running radio serial Berenice Beleagured, also trod the boards in many major musicals to thrill Australian audiences in the years after the war. Now all that remains of her career are snatches of songs and a string of memories. In the aftermath of her husbands death, she is alone at the beach celebrating Christmas where she confronts her ghosts, coming to terms with the bridges she has to cross to embrace her future.
In The Mourning After Verity Laughton guides us through the tangle of BelleÂ’s reminiscences. Often humorous and always engaging, there remains, however, an underlying sadness, a regret for what might have been.
The Mourning After features Jacqy Phillips as Belle Doyle.
